Math is a Slam Dunk is our school-based program offered on Saturdays or after-school or in the summer to help students become stronger in math, basketball and art. The program is currently offered to students in grades 4, 5 and 6. In the program, we teach students about real-world applications of math, and use basketball and art as a vehicle for practical, hands-on learning. Students learn to calculate shooting percentages, work with fractions, and measure the various geometric shapes of the basketball court. Additionally, the students get to work up a sweat and hone their basketball fundamental skills. Each day, they also take on an art project that involves some math and results in a beautiful take-home piece of art!
This program has proven to help students who have struggled in math. We also emphasize the vocabulary of math as well as ensuring that students are fundamentally sound with their math facts and number sense. It has been proven that students advance better in math when they understand the language of math. One of the nicest benefits of the program is that it also includes mentors from local high school students who act as math/basketball/art coaches. Once students have completed this program, they realize that MATH IS A SLAM DUNK!
